Gilfach-y-rhiw
Gilfach y Rhiw translated from Welsh means small lane on the hill. Its meaning is quite accurate as it is perched at approximately 700 feet, looking out over a stunning view of the surrounding area. From the top field of our farm we can see the Cambrian and Llanllwni Mountains to the north and Brechfa Forest and surrounding farm land to the West. Indeed the approach road from Brechfa village is very steep and narrow and if you on a rare occasion meet another car you will quite likely have to reverse to a suitable meeting place! However this makes it an ideal place for horse riding and particularly schooling young or nervous horses on the road without having to worry about meeting any traffic.
Brechfa village is a small community situated just a mile and a half away and although we feel quite secluded here the village lights seem quite close below us and quite comforting on a cold winters night! Brechfa has an excellent village shop and post office run by volounteres in the community and stocks everything from Wellington boots and pet food to Fair Trade Whole foods and every possible grocery item including fresh fruit and vegetables. The Brechfa shop Project has just won first prize in Carmarthenshire County Councils Award Scheme. Gilfach Wen is one of our closest neighbours and they provide very affordable Bunk House Barn Accomodation and you can actually see our farm from the view of some of their windows!
