A short story about Mata
Mata was given to us in February, 2008. We were asked to intervene by the vet who had been asked to put her down by the owner as unmanageable, violent and aggressive.
Anxious of what we would find we picked Mata up and released her into our stable barn. She was greeted by Ap our one year old filly who was still with her dam, Bonny. Mata reacted aggressively with Ap - kicking and biting at her, not surprising Ap made a run for it back to Bonny's side.
Bonny was very cross and came forward as the lead mare to sort out this new comer. Mata immediately backed down and become respectfully submissive. She has not put a hoof wrong since to either horse or humans.
What was going on in Mata's head? We will never know. Over the months we have heard various things about her previous life - none of which currently matters. Mata has responded exceptionally well to good handling, sympathetic backing and gentle persistent exercise.
We hack out with Mata in the lanes around Brechfa Forest and are gradually bringing this excellent mare on. She is strong and forward going and is more then capable of being ridden competitively if brought on slowly. We do not except to see a revival of her old attitude.
