What is Horse Whispering?
Communicating with the horse, essentially using the horses own body language.
It is a violence free training method where the horse and trainer operate together in mutual trust and partnership
Can anyone do it?
Yes, anyone who is interested can learn to use the gestures and body language that the horses naturally use to communicate with each other. The horses also have to learn it from each other (they are not born with it) and therefore it can be very difficult to train an orphan foal that has not learned to interact with other horses. Many experienced horse handlers already use this method, perhaps not always putting a name to it.
Join up and follow up
Join up is the foundation training process we use to prepare the new horse for training. It is based on the way the lead mare educates the youngsters of the herd in the wild. Look out for the gestures of compliance the horse makes to the trainer in the round pen (as they would to the lead mare)
- Turning the nearest ear towards the trainer
- Making the circle smaller
- Licking and chewing
- Lowering the head
Follow up is the horses acknowledgement of the trainers leadership and causes the horse to trust the trainer and more easily adapt to his schooling.
Advance and retreat
We reward the horse by removing the object of discomfort or fear when the horse stands still for a moment, and so gradually the horse learns to trust you not to expose him to something he can’t handle and gradually learns to tolerate more and more.
Problem solving
Almost every problem can be dealt with in this way.
To name a few:
- Loading
- Farrier
- Clipping
- Biting
- Catching
- Leading
- Fear of water and other objects
- Etc…
